Report widgets may declare a permissions key. WidgetManager::listReportWidgets() applies it, the add-widget popup offers only what it returns, and makeReportWidget() builds only what it contains — but ReportContainer::onAddWidget() took the class name from the request and constructed it regardless. It now works from that same list, and consults it before the class name is used for anything else, so every name that is not on it gets the same answer.

listReportWidgets() now applies its permission filter to a copy rather than to its own memo. The widget manager is a singleton for the life of the process, so filtering the memo hid a widget from every later caller in that process — including one acting as a user who does hold the permission.

The container renders two of a layout's stored values into attributes of its own, the column count and the sort order, and a layout can be published to every other backend user by a holder of backend.manage_default_dashboard. Every sort order the container derives or stores is now an integer, both values are compared and rendered as integers, and the remaining values in both container partials and in the toolbar partial they include are escaped. onUpdateWidget() keeps only the properties the container publishes for the widget — the same set it offers the inspector — and refuses a payload it can make none of those values out of, rather than applying it as an empty set, which would replace the widget's configuration with its declared defaults.

A report widget's title gets the same treatment through a new ReportWidgetBase::getTitle(), used by the three core report widget partials. trans() resolves a key naming a translation group to an array rather than a string, which cannot be rendered, so a title of that shape stored in a published layout made every dashboard serving that layout unrenderable — including the toolbar that would have let it be reset. The configured value is now rendered as written whenever translating it does not produce a string.

Behaviour changes

  • A report widget class that is not on the list the current user may add is refused by onAddWidget(), with the same answer whether it is unregistered, misspelled or permission-restricted.
  • onUpdateWidget() stores only the properties the container publishes for that widget at the time of the request. A widget whose declared property set depends on one of its own values will not have a property stored in the same request that first publishes it; posting the two changes in sequence stores both.
  • A stored column count or sort order that is not a number is rendered and compared as an integer rather than as written.
  • A title whose translation key names a group renders as the configured text instead of failing the dashboard.
  • onRemoveWidget() and onSetWidgetOrders() are unchanged: both act only on keys already present in the acting user's own stored layout and construct no widget.

Tests

Backend\Tests\Widgets\ReportContainerSecurityTest (38 tests) and two cases added to Backend\Tests\Controllers\IndexSecurityTest, including testTheContainerAndItsToolbarEscapeTheContainerAlias, testATitleNamingATranslationGroupStillRendersTheDashboard, testTheWidgetListIsNotHiddenFromALaterUserInTheSameProcess and testTheStoredWidgetWidthIsAnInteger.

30 of the 38 fail without the production changes. modules/backend is green at 336 tests / 845 assertions, modules/system at 348 / 1891 and modules/cms at 219 / 684; phpcs is clean on every changed file, partials included.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Dashboard widget lists now reflect the current user’s permissions without affecting what later users see.
    • Widget additions and updates now accept only available widgets and supported settings, with sizes and ordering handled consistently.
    • Dashboard markup safely displays widget names, attributes, and event handlers. Previously saved unusual values no longer prevent dashboards from rendering.
    • Report widget headings now display translated titles when available, with a fallback for titles that cannot be translated.

Report widgets may declare a `permissions` key. `WidgetManager::listReportWidgets()` applies it, the add-widget popup offers only what it returns, and `makeReportWidget()` builds only what it contains -- but `ReportContainer::onAddWidget()` took the class name from the request and constructed it regardless. It now works from that same list, and consults it before the class name is used for anything else, so every name that is not on it gets the same answer. `listReportWidgets()` now applies the permission filter to a copy rather than to its own memo: the widget manager is a singleton for the life of the process, so filtering the memo hid a widget from every later caller in that process, including one acting as a user who does hold the permission.

The container renders two of a layout's stored values into attributes of its own, the column count and the sort order, and a layout can be published to every other backend user by a holder of `backend.manage_default_dashboard`. Every sort order the container derives or stores is now an integer, both values are compared and rendered as integers, the remaining values in both container partials and in the toolbar partial they include are escaped, and `onUpdateWidget()` keeps only the properties the container publishes for the widget -- the same set it offers the inspector -- refusing a payload it can make none of those values out of rather than applying it as an empty set, which would replace the widget's configuration with its declared defaults. Typing the container's own two values also keeps a dashboard renderable when a layout stored earlier holds something other than a number in either of them.

A report widget's title gets the same treatment, through a new `ReportWidgetBase::getTitle()` that the three core report widget partials use. `trans()` resolves a key naming a translation group to an array rather than a string, which cannot be rendered, so a title of that shape stored in a published layout made every dashboard serving that layout unrenderable -- including the toolbar that would have let it be reset. The configured value is now rendered as written whenever translating it does not produce a string.

Behaviour changes:

- A report widget class that is not on the list the current user may add is refused by `onAddWidget()`, with the same answer whether it is unregistered, misspelled or permission-restricted.
- `onUpdateWidget()` stores only the properties the container publishes for that widget at the time of the request. A widget whose declared property set depends on one of its own values will not have a property stored in the same request that first publishes it; posting the two changes in sequence stores both.
- A stored column count or sort order that is not a number is rendered and compared as an integer rather than as written.
- A title whose translation key names a group renders as the configured text instead of failing the dashboard.
- `onRemoveWidget()` and `onSetWidgetOrders()` are unchanged: both act only on keys already present in the acting user's own stored layout and construct no widget, so neither reaches the permission filter. (The internal note that said all four handlers resolve through `makeReportWidget()` was wrong about these two.)

Covered by `Backend\Tests\Widgets\ReportContainerSecurityTest` (38 tests) and two cases added to `Backend\Tests\Controllers\IndexSecurityTest`, including `testTheContainerAndItsToolbarEscapeTheContainerAlias`, `testATitleNamingATranslationGroupStillRendersTheDashboard`, `testTheWidgetListIsNotHiddenFromALaterUserInTheSameProcess` and `testTheStoredWidgetWidthIsAnInteger`. 30 of the 38 fail without the production changes.

Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius.

Walkthrough

Report-widget operations now validate widget classes and submitted properties, and normalize layout widths and sort orders. Dashboard templates escape rendered attribute values. Widget headings use a shared title method, and permission-filtered widget listings no longer alter the manager’s stored list. Tests cover these changes and Inspector handler access responses.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~40 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 41466

Malformed widget-update requests can return a server error instead of a clear refusal. This is a bounded issue that can be fixed with a local input-type check.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 41466

The reviewed paths strengthen widget permissions and dashboard rendering. No new security exposure was identified, but the review could not establish that every possible widget-construction route uses the same permission check.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A published default layout can reach other backend users, but the inspected rendering path does not inherit its publisher's permission to construct restricted widgets.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The inspected request-controlled add path now rejects classes outside the acting user's available widget list before construction. No introduced or worsened attack path was established in that path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The dashboard controller checks backend.access_dashboard for AJAX requests. The container separately checks widget availability before adding or reconstructing widgets and checks a distinct permission before publishing defaults.
  • observed — The inspected container partial renders stored width and sort order as integers and escapes other displayed attribute values, including inspector configuration and widget aliases.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inspector advertises widths from 1 to 12, while the inspected server-side add and update paths cast width to an integer without enforcing that range. The prior add path also lacked range enforcement; this is not established as a new PR risk.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate stored width against the advertised range at the server boundary, particularly before a layout can be published as a default for other users.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

A non-string fields input can raise a TypeError instead of the intended refusal.

json_decode() requires a string. If a client posts fields[]=x, Request::input('fields') returns an array. PHP 8.1+ then throws a TypeError before the is_array guard runs, and the handler returns a 500 error instead of 'Invalid widget properties posted.'. The stored configuration does not change, so the impact is limited to the error contract. To fix this, check the input type before decoding.

Proposed fix
-        $properties = json_decode(Request::input('fields'), true);
+        $fields = Request::input('fields');
+        $properties = is_string($fields) ? json_decode($fields, true) : null;
