Jira: https://browserstack.atlassian.net/browse/PPLT-6237

Problem

  • The SDK reads only PERCY_CLI_API. percy exec --port N exports PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS, so the SDK health-checks :5338, logs Percy is not running, disabling snapshots, and the test exits 0 with an empty build ("Snapshot command was not called").
  • The dev/test pin is Playwright 1.40; the target is 1.63.

Upgrade-caused or pre-existing

  • Address resolution: pre-existing.
  • Pin: certification.

Fix

  • percy/screenshot.py: resolve the CLI address as PERCY_CLI_API → PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS → http://localhost:5338 (empty values are skipped). This matches the other SDKs and @percy/sdk-utils.
  • requirements.txt: playwright==1.63.* on Python ≥ 3.10. Playwright 1.63 requires Python ≥ 3.10, so the 3.8/3.9 CI jobs keep the previous 1.40.* pin through an environment marker.
  • setup.py is unchanged: install_requires stays playwright>=1.28.0 and python_requires stays >=3.6.
  • Tests: the httpretty/mock URLs now use percy.screenshot.PERCY_CLI_API instead of a hardcoded localhost:5338, so the suite runs under percy exec on any port. Added TestCliApiAddress, which covers precedence, fallback, empty values and the default.

How it was tested

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The screenshot service address can now be set with PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS when PERCY_CLI_API is not set. PERCY_CLI_API takes precedence, and the default remains http://localhost:5338.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Empty address values are ignored, allowing the configured fallback address or default to be used.

Resolve the CLI address as PERCY_CLI_API -> PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS -> default,
so `percy exec --port N` works without also exporting PERCY_CLI_API. Bump the
dev/test pin to playwright==1.63.* (Python >= 3.10). The install range in
setup.py is unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

The CLI API address now falls back to PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS before using the localhost default. The Playwright requirement now selects a version pin based on the Python version.

Changes: CLI API address resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve and test the CLI API address
percy/screenshot.py, tests/test_screenshot.py
The address resolver checks PERCY_CLI_API, then PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS, then the localhost default. Screenshot tests use the resolved address and cover environment-variable precedence, empty values, and the default.

Playwright version pins

Layer / File(s) Summary
Set Python-version-specific Playwright pins
requirements.txt
Playwright is pinned to 1.63.* for Python 3.10 and newer, and 1.40.* for earlier Python versions.

Assert the module-level address during import.

TestCliApiAddress checks only _get_cli_api_address(). The screenshot requests use the import-time local.PERCY_CLI_API value. Since the request mocks also build URLs from that same value, a regression in its initialization can make both the request and mock use the wrong default while all tests pass.

Reload percy.screenshot with only PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS set, then assert local.PERCY_CLI_API.

[Medium] Playwright 1.63 certification only exercised on Python 3.10

CI's test matrix is 3.8/3.9/3.10, so 1.63 runs only on 3.10; setup.py still declares playwright>=1.28.0.

Suggestion: Document the certified scope (Python ≥3.10) and consider adding 3.11/3.12 to .github/workflows/test.yml.

[Low] Resolved address not normalised

A trailing slash in PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS/PERCY_CLI_API produces //percy/... URLs.

[Low] Prefer clear=True over popping inside patch.dict

Works (patch.dict restores env), but inconsistent with test_defaults_to_5338.

Suggestion: patch.dict("os.environ", {"PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS": "http://localhost:2222"}, clear=True) and drop the added import os.

Summary

Resolves the CLI address as PERCY_CLI_API → PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS (exported by percy exec --port N) → http://localhost:5338, splits the Playwright dev/CI pin by Python version (1.63 on ≥3.10, 1.40 below), and makes test mocks follow the resolved address, with new TestCliApiAddress coverage.

Findings

  • File: requirements.txt:2

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: stack-percy-web-sdks-code-reviewer

  • Issue: "Certify Playwright 1.63" only changes the dev/CI pin. 1.63 is exercised only on the Python 3.10 CI job (.github/workflows/test.yml:16 matrix is 3.8/3.9/3.10); setup.py:24 still declares playwright>=1.28.0.

  • Suggestion: State the certified scope (Python ≥3.10) in the PR description/README, and consider adding 3.11/3.12 to the test matrix.

  • File: percy/screenshot.py:22

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: stack-percy-web-sdks-code-reviewer

  • Issue: The resolved address is not normalised; a trailing slash (e.g. http://localhost:5339/) yields //percy/healthcheck URLs.

  • Suggestion: .rstrip("/") the resolved value.

  • File: tests/test_screenshot.py:2096

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: stack:percy-web-sdks-code-review, stack-percy-web-sdks-code-reviewer

  • Issue: test_falls_back_to_percy_server_address pops PERCY_CLI_API inside patch.dict — works, but inconsistent with test_defaults_to_5338.

  • Suggestion: Use patch.dict("os.environ", {...}, clear=True) and drop the now-unneeded import os.

  • File: README.md

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: stack:percy-web-sdks-code-review, stack-percy-docs-reviewer

  • Issue: Neither the README nor the harness KB (FEATURE-FLAGS.md, flow-cli-sdk-handshake.md) documents PERCY_CLI_API / PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS precedence. Pre-existing gap; docs/coverage gate is N/A (non-architectural — adopts an existing CLI export).

  • Suggestion: Add a one-line precedence note to the README; follow up in harness stacks/stack-domain-percy-web-sdks/knowledge/.

ℹ️ stack-percy-docs-reviewer noted a tooling defect: roll-kb-pr.sh would target a non-existent stack-domain-percy-playwright-python stack and keep the mirror's domain/ prefix, so no KB PR was rolled. Not related to this PR.

Verdict: PASS
