feat: add GCP backing to provisioner-crossplane - #682
Conversation
- Add a GCP backing that builds a PostgresInstance as a Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL instance and a RedisInstance as a Memorystore for Redis instance, both on private IPs in the data plane's VPC network - Authenticate the providers with GKE Workload Identity, with each provider's ServiceAccount name fixed so the binding survives upgrades - Generate the Cloud SQL password in the Composition, since the provider cannot, and keep it in the Secret the ResourceType reads - Leave Delete out of the Cloud SQL database's and user's management policies, so their deletion cannot get stuck once the instance is gone - Run Memorystore with AUTH, without TLS - Name resources like the other backings, within the Cloud SQL and Memorystore limits - Add the GCP README and render inputs, and list GCP in the module and resource READMEs Signed-off-by: Miraj Abeysekara <miraj@wso2.com>

the auth_string range to fall back to the observed connection-secret’s
data.password when provider details are absent, so the desired Secret retains
its existing password instead of dropping the data key.

Purpose
Adds a GCP backing to the
provisioner-crossplanemodule, so a data plane on GKE can build theexisting
postgres-crossplaneandredis-crossplaneResources as Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL andMemorystore for Redis. The XRDs, the ResourceTypes and the Resources that use them stay the same,
since the Compositions installed on the data plane decide how each one is built.
Approach
gcp/: Compositions that build aPostgresInstanceas a Cloud SQL instance and aRedisInstanceas a Memorystore for Redis instance, both on private IPs in the data plane's VPC network
gcp/: the provider setup using GKE Workload Identity, and the data plane's settingsfirst time and copies it back from the Secret on every later reconcile, so it does not change. The
database and user leave
Deleteout of their management policies, since Cloud SQL removes bothwith the instance, and otherwise their deletion gets stuck once the instance is gone
AWS backings
Verified end to end on GKE 1.36 with OpenChoreo 1.3.1, Crossplane 2.4.2 and provider v3.1.0, from
provisioning to a dependent component connecting to each resource, along with a password change, a
delete and a recreate. The README's install and uninstall steps were also run as written.
