Hi @SAY-5, Thanks for opening the PR. I went through Fluent-bit java multiline parser and noted that it inherently captures C# multiline stacktraces as well (Ref: https://github.com/fluent/fluent-bit/blob/master/src/multiline/flb_ml_parser_java.c#L97). Have you tried logging dotNet stacktraces using only Java multiline parser before implementing a custom parser on your own? Even though Fluent-bit does not have a native DotNet / C# parser, if we could utilize the built-in Java multiline parser for this use case, it would be better. |
|
I did look at the built-in java parser first: it covers the indented '--- End of inner exception stack trace ---' marker and the 'at ' frames, but its async rule is hardcoded to the pre-.NET-5 wording '--- End of stack trace from previous location where exception was thrown ---' anchored at column 0, while .NET 5+ emits the shortened '--- End of stack trace from previous location ---' with a three-space indent, so those lines still break the group. It also has no rule for AggregateException's column-0 '---> (Inner Exception #0)' blocks. That is why this ships a dedicated parser instead of reusing java, though happy to switch if you prefer to live with those two gaps. |
|
Hi @SAY-5 , thanks for the clarification. Still there might be issues with dotnet stacktraces parsing as the java parser comes before the dotnet parser in the ordering. Some dotnet exceptions could be matched by the java parser and could fail mid way. Therefore, instead of shipping hardcoded custom parsers, how about we make it flexible to provide custom parsers through helm values, and give the dotnet parser as an example there? This way we can guarantee what we ship is always work, while providing extensibility. |
|
Makes sense, moved the multiline parsers into fluent-bit.multilineParsers in values.yaml so they're rendered rather than hardcoded, with the dotnet one kept as the shipped default/example. Confirmed with helm template that the default output is unchanged and that adding or clearing entries in the list renders correctly. |

Fluent Bit multiline_parsing MULTILINE_PARSER rule quotes state regex nextState
💡 Result:
In Fluent Bit, a MULTILINE_PARSER of type regex uses rules to define how log lines are concatenated [1][2]. Each rule consists of three mandatory components: a state name, a regular expression pattern, and the next state [1][3]. Configuration Details: - Rule Structure: The order of components in a rule is: state name, regular expression pattern, and next state [1][4]. - Quotes: Every field within a rule definition must be enclosed in double quotes (e.g., "start_state", "/regex/", "next_state") [1][4]. - States: The initial state must always be named "start_state" [1][2]. This state matches the first line of a multiline message [1][5]. The next state defines the state to transition to if the current line matches the regex, allowing for complex state machines where "cont" or other custom names specify continuation lines [1][3]. - Regex: The regular expression pattern should be enclosed within slashes inside the quotes (e.g., "/^pattern/") [1][6]. Example of the rule syntax: rule "state_name" "/regex_pattern/" "next_state" For instance, a standard setup where a log starts with a timestamp and continues with indented lines would look like this in a configuration file: rule "start_state" "/([a-zA-Z]+ \d+ \d+:\d+:\d+)(.)/" "cont" rule "cont" "/^\s+at./" "cont" Note: While YAML configuration is increasingly common, the rule syntax—specifically the requirement for double quotes around all three fields—remains a critical aspect of defining these patterns for Fluent Bit's multiline engine [1][7][6].

multi_line_parser multiline.parser parser names comma whitespace validator go java python Fluent Bit
💡 Result:
In Fluent Bit, the multiline.parser configuration parameter accepts a comma-separated list of parser names [1]. When multiple parsers are specified in this way, Fluent Bit interprets it as a multi-format matching attempt: it will sequentially try each parser in the order provided and apply the first one that successfully matches the log record (i.e., the first parser that has a start_state which matches the log) [1]. Configuration details: - Multiline parsers are defined in a [MULTILINE_PARSER] section or a multiline_parsers YAML section [2][3][4]. - The multiline.parser option is used within [INPUT] or [FILTER] sections to specify which multiline parsers to apply to the data stream [5][1]. - Supported built-in multiline parsers often include formats such as docker, cri, go, and ruby [6]. - While the parser names are provided in a comma-separated list, Fluent Bit handles the associated whitespace automatically during the configuration parsing process [1]. Therefore, providing a list like multiline.parser go, multiline-regex-test tells Fluent Bit to attempt to match the log against the go parser first, and if that fails, proceed to the multiline-regex-test parser [1].

Escape rule fields in custom multiline parsers.
Line 90 renders state, regex, and nextState inside existing quotes, so a configurable field value containing " is not valid Fluent Bit rule syntax. Escape these values before rendering, or constrain the values so quotes are impossible.

Shall we move this multilineParsers block to a new root level block as follows?
fluentBitCustomizations:
multilineParsers:
- name: dotnet
rules:
- state: start_state
regex: "/^.*Exception[:,].*$/"
nextState: cont
- state: cont
regex: "/^\\s*(at |--- End of|---> ).*$/"
nextState: contIf we do it that way, we know that all fields in the fluent-bit block gets passed to the upstream chart. Otherwise we will have a mix of custom fields and upstream fields. By keeping them separate, it will be easier to distinguish at once, rather than going through the templates.
(I understand there are few custom fields that have already been added under fluent-bit. But we will move them out in the future).

Done. main already had a root level fluentBitCustomizations block for clusterInstance, so multilineParsers now sits next to it and the template reads it from there. I also rebased onto main and squashed into a single signed off commit, which should clear the DCO check.

Put the .NET parser before java.
When a .NET exception header matches Fluent Bit’s built-in java start rule, java takes precedence over the appended dotnet parser. The Java continuation rules do not match the ---> inner-exception marker. Such exceptions can still be split into separate documents. Put dotnet before java, or otherwise make the parser order configurable so the more specific parser runs first. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Purpose
Multi-line exceptions (a .NET
FluentValidation.ValidationException, or a Java/Go/Python stack trace) emitted by a workload are indexed into OpenSearch as one document per physical line instead of one document per exception, so a single error is scattered across manycontainer-logs-*documents and continuation lines get inconsistent log levels. Fixes openchoreo/openchoreo#4149.Approach
The
tailinput only usesmultiline.parser docker, cri, which handles the container-runtime partial-line protocol but does not concatenate application lines belonging to one stack trace. I added an application-levelmultilinefilter (keyed onlog) that runs before thekubernetesfilter, using Fluent Bit's built-ingo,javaandpythonstack-trace parsers..NET has no built-in Fluent Bit parser, so
dotnetis defined as a custom[MULTILINE_PARSER]inparsers.conf(matching theException:header andat .../--- End of ... ---continuation lines), and a comment documents how to add another custom parser for formats the built-ins do not cover.I validated the rendered ConfigMap with
fluent-bit:latest: the config loads without error and a sampleFluentValidation.ValidationExceptionwith itsat ...frames is emitted as a single record instead of separate documents.Related Issues
