[BUG] npm i shows allow-scripts uncovered dependency warning even if dependency was already approved #9488
> npm i
up to date, audited 3 packages in 137ms

npm warn allow-scripts 1 package has install scripts not yet covered by allowScripts:
npm warn allow-scripts testdep@1.0.0 (postinstall: exit 1)
npm warn allow-scripts
npm warn allow-scripts Run `npm approve-scripts --allow-scripts-pending` to review, or `npm approve-scripts <pkg>` to allow.
This is a known friction point in the npm v12 allowScripts migration. The warning fires because the current
implementation doesn't check whether the package was previously approved in certain edge cases (e.g.,
transitive dependencies that get re-resolved after a lockfile refresh).
Practical workaround: set allow-scripts=all in .npmrc temporarily, run your install, then use npm approve-scripts --allow-scripts-pending to audit the actual list, approve trusted packages, and switch back.
Full step-by-step: https://npmv12guide.com — the native modules section covers how to handle this without
breaking your CI.
The npm team has acknowledged this class of issues in the Preparing for npm v12 discussion (#198547), so a fix
should land before v12 goes stable.
