This repository contains all documents and notes of the Matrix Working Group (WG) focused on promoting alternative Homeservers within the Matrix ecosystem.
Note
This Working Group is currently in the process of being migrated to be a formal working group. The location and name of this repository may change soon.
The Matrix Homeserver Decentralisation Working Group promotes decentralisation across the Matrix network by helping users discover and join homeservers other than matrix.org.
The Working Group focuses on improving the onboarding experience across Matrix homeservers and clients. This may include developing technical solutions for homeserver discovery and selection, as well as proposing broader ecosystem improvements that make decentralised onboarding easier and more reliable.
- A technical solution that helps users choose a suitable public homeserver.
- A Matrix.org Foundation-maintained list of trusted public homeservers.
- Clear, public criteria for inclusion on and removal from the trusted homeserver list.
- A transparent process through which homeserver operators can apply for inclusion.
The Working Group is responsible for maintaining The Matrix.org Foundation’s trusted public homeserver list and periodically reviewing the homeservers included on it.
The WG will hold regular meetings on every first Monday of the month at 19:00 CET/CEST to discuss progress, challenges, and next steps. Meeting notes will be documented and stored in this repository.
You can subscribe to the meeting event calendar with this iCal feed:

If you want to get involved, join a meeting or just follow our progress, feel free to join the #homeserver-decentralisation:matrix.org room.
The WG will not focus on the technical development of homeservers themselves, but rather on the onboarding experience and the ecosystem as a whole.
Additionally, the WG does not currently aim to assist in starting your own homeserver, but rather to promote existing alternative homeservers. See the "Other Useful Resources" section below for links that may help you in starting your own homeserver.
We also do not aim to come up with a system to publish every possible homeserver list. We rather focus on improving the onboarding experience for first time users and providing a clear policy for the Foundation's "trusted" server list. We will not maintain a comprehensive list of all public homeservers, but rather focus on promoting a select few that meet our criteria for inclusion in the Foundation's "recommended" server list.
