out_stackdriver read the WriteLogEntries response into a fixed 4192-byte buffer. When Cloud Logging rejects a request with a 400, the error body lists the bad entries and is usually way bigger than that, so the HTTP client hit cannot increase buffer, flb_http_do() returned -1 and the plugin treated it as a transport error. The 400 never got logged or parsed, the chunk was retried until Retry_Limit, and with partialSuccess: true the good entries got written again on every retry.

Added a buffer_size option like out_es / out_opensearch / out_loki: a size option, default 512k, and false or 0 for unlimited. That default is enough for a ~40 KB error body. gce_metadata.c still uses FLB_STD_METADATA_TOKEN_SIZE_MAX (those responses are short and came back HTTP 200 in the repro). Service-account token exchange goes through flb_oauth2 in core and is unchanged.

Local repro (metadata server + TLS logging server returning HTTP 400 with a 41208-byte partial-success JSON body, no real GCP credentials):

Before (4192 cap): 6 posts of the same chunk, cannot increase buffer / http_do=-1 / failed to flush chunk ... retry.

After (default 512k): 1 post, HTTP Status=400 with the error JSON, no retry. Valgrind clean on that path.

Docs for buffer_size belong in the separate fluent-bit docs repo (stackdriver output page); not updated here.

Fixes #12510

Testing

  • Build: CC=gcc CXX=g++ cmake .. -DFLB_DEV=On -DFLB_TESTS_RUNTIME=On -DFLB_OUT_STACKDRIVER=On && make -j$(nproc)
  • ./bin/flb-rt-out_stackdriver — 103 passed, 0 failed
  • Integration pytest scenarios/out_stackdriver — 2 passed, 2 skipped (STACKDRIVER_TEST_CREDENTIALS unset)
  • Same under Valgrind — 2 passed, 2 skipped; manual repro: 0 leaks, 0 errors
  • python3 .github/scripts/commit_prefix_check.py — passed

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a configurable limit for Cloud Logging HTTP response buffering. The default is 512 KB; setting buffer_size to 0 allows unlimited buffering.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid buffer sizes now cause initialization to fail. Nonzero sizes below the supported minimum are also rejected, rather than being treated as unlimited.

The write path capped the HTTP response buffer at 4192 bytes. A Cloud
Logging HTTP 400 whose body lists the failing entries is often larger
than that, so flb_http_do() failed with "cannot increase buffer" and
the plugin returned FLB_RETRY. The 400 was never parsed, valid entries
were sent again, and partialSuccess produced duplicates.

Use a buffer_size option (default 512k, false/0 unlimited), matching
out_es, out_opensearch, and out_loki. A 4xx body now reaches the
existing status handling and is dropped instead of retried.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The Stackdriver output adds a configurable HTTP response-buffer size. The default is 512k, and zero means unlimited. Initialization rejects unparsable values and nonzero values below the minimum.

Changes

Stackdriver response buffering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and validate buffer size
plugins/out_stackdriver/stackdriver.h, plugins/out_stackdriver/stackdriver.c, tests/runtime/out_stackdriver.c
The output adds a buffer_size setting with a 512k default. Zero means unlimited. Initialization rejects unparsable values and nonzero values below the minimum. Runtime tests cover "512zz" and "1k".
Apply buffer size to requests
plugins/out_stackdriver/stackdriver.c
Requests use the configured response-buffer size instead of the fixed 4192-byte limit. If setting the size fails, the flush path releases the payload, token, HTTP client, and connection, then returns FLB_ERROR.

The response-buffer change appears to preserve the intended handling, and invalid sizes are rejected. An automated test for oversized error responses and retry behavior would improve confidence, but no production defect is established.

An unparsable buffer_size was turned into 0, which means unlimited, so
a typo removed the response cap entirely. A nonzero size below the HTTP
client minimum was also silently ignored because the return value of
flb_http_buffer_size() was never checked.

Fail init for both cases, keep 'false' or 0 as unlimited, and check the
flb_http_buffer_size() return in flush. Add runtime tests for an
invalid and a too small buffer_size.

Thanks for the catch. Pushed a fix: an invalid buffer_size now fails init instead of quietly turning into unlimited, and sizes below the http client minimum (4096) get rejected too, so they can't be silently ignored. Also checking the flb_http_buffer_size() return in flush now. Added two runtime tests for the invalid and too small cases. false/0 still mean unlimited.

6785-6826: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add an oversized HTTP-error regression test.

The new tests only check that invalid buffer_size values fail initialization. The existing integration handlers return 200 for logging POST requests. The 503 response in test_workers.py applies only to token refresh. No test sends a 400 response larger than 4192 bytes or counts logging requests to prove that the chunk is not retried. Reverting the buffer application to the old cap would therefore leave these tests passing.

Add an integration fixture that returns an oversized 400 body from /v2/entries:write, then assert that the response reaches Stackdriver status handling and that the same chunk produces only one logging request.

Thanks! I looked at adding that one, but the stackdriver runtime tests don't spin up any HTTP endpoint right now. Covering it properly would mean mocking both the token endpoint and entries:write, which feels out of scope for this fix. Happy to do it as a follow-up if maintainers want it.
