a resolution root that contains every supported file.

| ESLint should be able to store file paths in the cache file relative to the cache file location, instead of as absolute paths. This should be opt-in through a new `--cache-paths` CLI option and a matching `cachePaths` option in the `ESLint` constructor. Both accept `"absolute"` (the default, which keeps today's behavior) or `"relative"`. | ||
|
|
||
| For example, if `.eslintcache` is in the project root, the entry for `/home/alice/repo/src/a.js` should be stored as `src/a.js`. A copy of that cache file in `/home/ci/builds/42/repo` or in a git worktree at `/home/alice/repo-feature` should then give cache hits for `src/a.js`. |

Qualify the cache-hit claim with the cache strategy.
Relative keys fix path matching, but the default metadata strategy can still miss when a Git checkout changes file modification times. State that cross-checkout cache hits require --cache-strategy content or preserved metadata. The CLI example already uses the content strategy. (eslint.org)

Yeah, we anticipate that use cases where the --cache-paths relative feature will be used will typically also need --cache-strategy content. It would be good to note that in this section, as well as in the Documentation section of this RFC as a reminder to mention it in ESLint docs.

@mdjermanovic Thanks for the guidance. The RFC should explain this in both sections.
- Update the Summary example in
designs/2026-portable-cache-paths/README.mdwith this qualification:Relative paths allow cache entries to match across checkouts. These use cases typically also need
--cache-strategy content, because file modification times can change between checkouts. The defaultmetadatastrategy can still produce cache misses unless file metadata is preserved. - Add a reminder in the Documentation section to explain this interaction in the ESLint CLI and Node.js API documentation.
- Keep the existing CLI example using
--cache-strategy content.

Learning: The ESLint portable-cache RFC in designs/2026-portable-cache-paths/README.md anticipates that --cache-paths relative use cases will typically also need --cache-strategy content. The RFC should explain this interaction in its Summary and include a reminder in its Documentation section to cover it in ESLint's user documentation.

| ### Restoring `filePath` | ||
|
|
||
| Each cached lint result also stores an absolute `filePath`, which would point to the wrong location on another machine. When `cachePaths` is `"relative"`, `setCachedLintResults()` will store the relative key in `filePath`, and `getCachedLintResults()` will set it back to the current absolute path. |

I'm wondering if we actually need to store anything in the filePath property in the cache. Perhaps getCachedLintResults() could just set it to the value that was passed to it (the filePath parameter)?

| ### Cache File Name When `--cache-location` Is a Folder | ||
|
|
||
| When `--cache-location` points at a folder, `getCacheFile()` names the cache file using a hash of the absolute `cwd`, so the name differs in every location. When `cachePaths` is `"relative"`, ESLint will hash `path.relative(cacheFolder, cwd)` with `/` separators instead. | ||

Can you please also specify how an existing cache in a different format would be handled (would it be ignored, converted, raise a warning)?
This would be a likely case when developers migrate from the current cache with absolute paths.
Summary
This RFC adds a
--cache-pathsoption (cachePathsin the Node.js API) with the valuesabsolute(default) andrelative. Withrelative, ESLint stores file paths in the cache relative to the cache file, so you can use one cache file in git worktrees, in CI, and on other machines.Related Issues
