Tagless ADTs #422
Description
Rel8 represents an ADT by:
- adding a tag column
- making all the columns of all constructors nullable
This representation can lead to inefficient queries. At CircuitHub, we have sometimes chosen to represent ADT shaped things not as an ADT to avoid these issues.
We generate rather complex SQL to construct and deconstruct the ADTs.
Yet, in many cases we can deduce which case we are in purely from whether certain fields are NULL, and we do not need a tag at all.
We should investigate whether we can implement a tagless version of the ADT, which generates simpler SQL.
