Bumps github/codeql-action/init from 4.37.9 to 4.38.1.

Release notes

Sourced from github/codeql-action/init's releases.

v4.38.1

  • The CodeQL Action now has experimental support for CodeQL releases for which per-language bundles are available. Per-language bundles support analysis for a single language and are therefore smaller than the combined bundles that allow analysis for all supported languages. As a result, per-language bundles take up less space on disk and are faster to download. We expect to roll this change out to everyone in the coming weeks. #4146

v4.38.0

  • On GitHub-hosted runners, the CodeQL Action now deletes unused CodeQL bundles from the toolcache before downloading a different bundle, which frees up disk space for the analysis. We expect to roll this change out to everyone in September. #4124
  • The CodeQL Action now supports CodeQL releases that are compatible with Linux Arm64 and downloads the native linux-arm64 CodeQL bundle when available. #4072
  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.27.0. #4129

4.38.1 - 18 Sept 2026

  • The CodeQL Action now has experimental support for CodeQL releases for which per-language bundles are available. Per-language bundles support analysis for a single language and are therefore smaller than the combined bundles that allow analysis for all supported languages. As a result, per-language bundles take up less space on disk and are faster to download. We expect to roll this change out to everyone in the coming weeks. #4146

4.38.0 - 09 Sept 2026

  • On GitHub-hosted runners, the CodeQL Action now deletes unused CodeQL bundles from the toolcache before downloading a different bundle, which frees up disk space for the analysis. We expect to roll this change out to everyone in September. #4124
  • The CodeQL Action now supports CodeQL releases that are compatible with Linux Arm64 and downloads the native linux-arm64 CodeQL bundle when available. #4072
  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.27.0. #4129

4.37.9 - 26 Aug 2026

  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.26.4. #4106

4.37.8 - 21 Aug 2026

No user facing changes.

4.37.7 - 13 Aug 2026

  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.26.3. #4085

4.37.6 - 04 Aug 2026

  • Changed the default filepath for the new remote file address format that was introduced in CodeQL Action 4.37.0 / 3.37.0 to .github/codeql-config.yml to align it with the suggested path that is used elsewhere. #4070

4.37.5 - 03 Aug 2026

  • Fixed a bug where a network error while streaming the download of the CodeQL bundle could terminate the init Action instead of falling back to downloading the bundle before extracting it. #4061

4.37.4 - 29 Jul 2026

  • This version of the CodeQL Action adds support for the tools input for the codeql-action/init step to be specified using a github-codeql-tools repository property. This feature will gradually be rolled out following the release of this version. Once rolled out, this allows for the CodeQL CLI version that is used in GitHub-managed workflows, such as Default Setup, to be set to a custom value. For example, customers who run into issues with rate limits when a new CodeQL CLI version is released can set the value to toolcache to always use the CodeQL CLI version that is available in the runner toolcache. For Advanced Setup workflows, the value provided for tools in the workflow definition always takes precedence unless the value of the repository property starts with !. #4037
  • Update default CodeQL bundle version to 2.26.2. #4051

4.37.3 - 22 Jul 2026

No user facing changes.

4.37.2 - 21 Jul 2026

  • The new address format for the config-file input that was introduced in CodeQL Action 4.37.0 is now enabled by default. In addition to the format described there, the remote= prefix can now be used to explicitly indicate that the input refers to a remote file. All previous input formats continue to be accepted as well. #4023

Code scanning is available for the following repository types: - Public repositories on GitHub.com - Organization-owned repositories on GitHub Team, GitHub Enterprise Cloud, or GitHub Enterprise Server, with GitHub Code Security enabled. ## About code scanning with a containerized build If you&`#39`;re configuring code scanning for a compiled language, and you&`#39`;re building the code in a containerized environment, the analysis may fail with the error message "No source code was seen during the build." This indicates that CodeQL was unable to monitor your code as it was compiled. You must run CodeQL inside the container in which you build your code. This applies whether you are using the CodeQL CLI or GitHub Actions. For the CodeQL CLI, see Using code scanning with your existing CI system for more information. If you&`#39`;re using GitHub Actions, configure your workflow to run all the actions in the same container. For more information, see Example workflow. Note The CodeQL CLI is currently not compatible with non-glibc Linux distributions such as (musl-based) Alpine Linux. ## Dependencies for CodeQL code scanning You may have difficulty running code scanning if the container you&`#39`;re using is missing certain dependencies (for example, Git must be installed and added to the PATH variable). If you encounter dependency issues, review the list of software typically included on GitHub&`#39`;s runner images. For more information, see the version-specific `readme` files in these locations: - Linux: https://github.com/actions/runner-images/tree/main/images/ubuntu - macOS: https://github.com/actions/runner-images/tree/main/images/macos - Windows: https://github.com/actions/runner-images/tree/main/images/windows ## Example workflow This sample workflow uses GitHub Actions to run CodeQL analysis in a containerized environment. The value of `container.image` identifies the container to use. In this example the image is named `codeql-container`, with a tag of `f0f91db`. For more information, see Workflow syntax for GitHub Actions. ```yaml name: "CodeQL" on: push: branches: [main] pull_request: branches: [main] schedule: - cron: &`#39`;15 5 * * 3&`#39`; jobs: analyze: name: Analyze runs-on: ubuntu-latest permissions: security-events: write actions: read strategy: fail-fast: false matrix: language: [java-kotlin] # Specify the container in which actions will run container: image: codeql-container:f0f91db steps: - name: Checkout repository uses: actions/checkout@v6 - name: Initialize CodeQL uses: github/codeql-action/init@v4 with: languages: ${{ matrix.language }} - name: Build run: | ./configure make - name: Perform CodeQL Analysis uses: github/codeql-action/analyze@v4 ``` <title>Error: "No source code was seen during the build"</title> https://github.com/proxy/docs.github.com/en/code-security/reference/code-scanning/troubleshoot-analysis-errors/no-source-code-seen-during-build # Error: "No source code was seen during the build" When CodeQL fails to find any source code, you need to resolve this problem to unblock code scanning analysis. If your workflow fails with `Error: "No source code was seen during the build"` or `The process &`#39`;/opt/hostedtoolcache/CodeQL/0.0.0-20200630/x64/codeql/codeql&`#39`; failed with exit code 32`, this indicates that CodeQL was unable to monitor your code. There are six possible reasons for this: 1. No supported languages: The repository may not contain source code that is written in languages supported by CodeQL. Check the list of supported languages and, if this is the case, remove the CodeQL workflow. For more information, see Code scanning with CodeQL. 2. No analyzable code of the detected languages: Automatic language detection identified a supported language, but there is no analyzable code of that language in the repository. A typical example is when our language detection service finds a file associated with a particular programming language like a `.h`, or `.gyp` file, but no corresponding executable code is present in the repository. To solve the problem, you can manually define the languages you want to analyze by updating the list of languages in the `language` matrix. For example, the following configuration will analyze only Go, and JavaScript. ```yaml strategy: fail-fast: false matrix: # Override automatic language detection by changing the list below. # Supported options are listed in a comment in the default workflow. language: [&`#39`;go&`#39`;, &`#39`;javascript-typescript&`#39`;] ``` For more information, see the workflow extract in Some languages were not analyzed with CodeQL advanced setup. 1. Compilation of a compiled language failed: Your code scanning workflow tries to compile a compiled language (C, C++, C#, Go, or Java), but the code was not compiled. When a workflow specifies `build-mode: autobuild` for a language or contains an `autobuild` step, CodeQL makes a best effort to detect a suitable build method and build your code. The `autobuild` process may not succeed in building your code, depending on your specific build environment. Compilation may also fail if you have removed the `autobuild` step and did not include build steps manually. For more information about defining build steps, see CodeQL code scanning for compiled languages. 2. Cached components not detected: Your workflow builds a compiled language (C, C++, C#, Go, or Java) to create a CodeQL database for analysis, but portions of your build are cached to improve performance (most likely to occur with build systems like Gradle or Bazel). Since CodeQL observes the activity of the compiler to understand the data flows in a repository, CodeQL requires a complete build to take place in order to perform analysis. 3. Compilation outside `init` and `analyze` steps: Your workflow builds a compiled language (C, C++, C#, Go, or Java), but compilation does not occur between the `init` and `analyze` steps in the workflow. CodeQL requires that your build happens in between these two steps in order to observe the activity of the compiler and perform analysis. 4. Compilation not detected by CodeQL: Your compiled code (in C, C++, C#, Go, or Java) was compiled successfully, but CodeQL was unable to detect the compiler invocations. The most common causes are: - Running your build process in a separate container to CodeQL. For more information, see Running CodeQL code scanning in a container. - Building using a distributed build system external to GitHub Actions, using a daemon process. - CodeQL isn&`#39`;t aware of the specific compiler you are using. If you encounter another problem with your specific compiler or configuration, contact us through the GitHub Support portal. For more information about specifying build steps, see CodeQL code scanning for compiled languages. <title>Code scanning with CodeQL</title> https://github.com/proxy/docs.github.com/en/enterprise-server@3.21/code-security/concepts/code-scanning/codeql/codeql-code-scanning # Code scanning with CodeQL You can use CodeQL to identify vulnerabilities and errors in your code. The results are shown as code scanning alerts in GitHub. > [!NOTE] > Your site administrator must enable code scanning before you can use this feature. For more information, see Configuring code scanning for your appliance. > > You may not be able to enable or disable code scanning if an enterprise owner has set a GitHub Code Security policy at the enterprise level. For more information, see Enforcing policies for code security and analysis for your enterprise. CodeQL is the code analysis engine developed by GitHub to automate security checks. You can analyze your code using CodeQL and display the results as code scanning alerts. There are three main ways to use CodeQL analysis for code scanning: - Use default setup to quickly configure CodeQL analysis for code scanning on your repository. Default setup automatically chooses the languages to analyze, query suite to run, and events that trigger scans. If you prefer, you can manually select the query suite to run and languages to analyze. After you enable CodeQL, GitHub Actions will execute workflow runs to scan your code. For more information, see Configuring default setup for code scanning. - Use advanced setup to add the CodeQL workflow to your repository. This generates a customizable workflow file which uses the github/codeql-action to run the CodeQL CLI. For more information, see Configuring advanced setup for code scanning. - Run the CodeQL CLI directly in an external CI system and upload the results to GitHub. For more information, see Using code scanning with your existing CI system. > [!NOTE] > On GitHub Enterprise Server 3.21, the CodeQL action uses CodeQL CLI version 2.24.3 by default. We recommend that you use the same version of the CodeQL CLI if you run analysis in an external CI system. For information about code scanning alerts, see Code scanning alerts. ## About CodeQL CodeQL is a programming language and associated tools that treat code like data. It was created explicitly to make it easier to analyze code and find potential vulnerabilities in your code with greater confidence than traditional static analyzers. 1. You generate a CodeQL database to represent your codebase. 2. Then you run CodeQL queries on that database to identify problems in the codebase. 3. The query results are shown as code scanning alerts in GitHub when you use CodeQL with code scanning. CodeQL supports both compiled and interpreted languages, and can find vulnerabilities and errors in code that&`#39`;s written in the supported languages. CodeQL supports the following languages: - C/C++ - C# - Go - Java/Kotlin - JavaScript/TypeScript - Python - Ruby - Rust - Swift - GitHub Actions workflows > [!NOTE] > > - Use `java-kotlin` to analyze code written in Java, Kotlin or both. > - Use `javascript-typescript` to analyze code written in JavaScript, TypeScript or both. For more information, see the documentation on the CodeQL website: Supported languages and frameworks. > [!IMPORTANT] > CodeQL does not support languages that are not listed above. This includes, but is not limited to, PHP, Scala, and others. Attempting to use CodeQL with unsupported languages may result in no alerts being generated and incomplete analysis. ## Modeling custom or niche frameworks GitHub experts, security researchers, and community contributors write libraries to model the flow of data in popular frameworks and libraries. If you use custom dependencies that aren&`#39`;t modeled, then you can use the CodeQL extension for Visual Studio Code to create models for these dependencies and use them to extend your analysis. For more information, see Using the CodeQL model editor. ## CodeQL queries GitHub experts, security researchers, and community contributors write and maintain the default CodeQL queries used for code scanning. In general, you do not need to worry about where the CodeQL analysis workflow places CodeQL databases since later steps will automatically find databases created by previous steps. However, if you are writing a custom workflow step that requires the CodeQL database to be in a specific disk location, for example to upload the database as a workflow artifact, you can specify that location using the `db-location` parameter under the `init` action. ... ```yaml - uses: github/codeql-action/init@v4 with: db-location: &`#39`;${{ github.runner_temp }}/my_location&`#39`; ... We recommend that only one language is provided as an argument: ... ```yaml - uses: github/codeql-action/init@v4 with: languages: javascript-typescript ... The default CodeQL analysis workflow file created after configuring advanced setup for code scanning with CodeQL defines a matrix containing a property named `language` which lists the languages in your repository that will be analyzed. This matrix has been automatically pre-populated with supported languages detected in your repository. Using the `language` matrix allows CodeQL to run each language analysis in parallel and to customize analysis for each language. In an individual analysis, the name of the language from the matrix is provided to the `init` action as the argument for the `languages` input. We recommend that all workflows adopt this configuration. If your workflow uses the `language` matrix, then ... QL will only analyze the languages in the matrix. To change the languages you want to analyze, edit the matrix configuration. You can remove a language to prevent it from being analyzed. There are several reasons you might want to prevent a language being analyzed. For example, the project might have dependencies in a different language to the main body of your code, and you might prefer not to see alerts for those dependencies. Many thanks for reaching out to us with this issue. The problem here is that your workflow specifies version `@v2.1.9` in the `init` step but uses `@v2` in the `analyze` step. Having mismatched versions of the different steps in a CodeQL workflow is not a configuration we support, and we generally recommend using the same version for all the steps. If you are using an advanced setup, we recommend referencing the CodeQL Action using a major version tag (e.g. `v4`) in your workflow file. This ensures your workflow automatically picks up the latest release within that major version, including bug fixes, new features, and updated CodeQL CLI versions. ... If you pin to a specific commit SHA or patch version tag, ensure you keep it updated (e.g. via Dependabot). Some CodeQL Action features are enabled by server-side flags that may be removed over time, which can cause old versions to lose functionality.

Use the same CodeQL Action release for initialization and analysis.

This job runs init at v4.38.1 and analyze at v4.37.9. CodeQL does not support mismatched action versions. The workflow may fail during analysis when the two versions exchange incompatible state. Update analyze to the v4.38.1 commit used by init, or pin both steps to v4.37.9.

In @.github/workflows/codeql.yml at line 56, Update the CodeQL workflow so the
analyze step uses the same action release as the init step, preferably pinning
analyze to the v4.38.1 commit already used by github/codeql-action/init. Keep
both CodeQL action steps on one identical version.

…imit, one codeql SHA (#23)

* chore(deps): group codeql-action on both channels, explicit actions limit, one codeql SHA

- dependabot.yml github-actions: a narrow `github/codeql-action*` group
for version updates, the same group repeated with `applies-to:
security-updates` (a group without it covers version updates only),
and an explicit open-pull-requests-limit of 13 — the number of
distinct actions in the workflows, so no bump is ever held back. The
default of 5 had this ecosystem at its cap.
- All three codeql-action subpaths (init, analyze, upload-sarif) move to
v4.38.2 on one SHA in one commit. This supersedes the split
  Dependabot PRs #19, #21 and #22.

No .coderabbit.yaml is added: without one, the organization settings
govern, which is what the standard wants.

Looks like github/codeql-action/init is up-to-date now, so this is no longer needed.
