Summary

SET ... TRANSACTION was parsed and emitted lossily in both dialects. Emitted SQL and digests dropped the scope, misread READ ONLY as an isolation level, let whitespace and comments leak through, and kept only the first characteristic. Some PostgreSQL SET emitters also dropped content entirely. This PR parses the whole SET TRANSACTION statement in one place and stores canonical AST values. It also rejects anything the servers reject, so consumers never get a partial OK parse.

Defects (1.1.0) and results after this PR (NORMAL and DIGEST output are identical unless noted)

Dialect Input 1.1.0 This PR
MySQL SET GLOBAL TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ COMMITTED SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ COMMITTED (scope lost; same for SESSION/LOCAL) SET GLOBAL TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ COMMITTED
MySQL SET SESSION TRANSACTION READ ONLY SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ ONLY SET SESSION TRANSACTION READ ONLY
MySQL SET session transaction isolation level read committed SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL read committed SET SESSION TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ COMMITTED
MySQL SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION /*c*/ LEVEL REPEATABLE\nREAD raw newline kept in output SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL REPEATABLE READ
MySQL SET PERSIST TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL PERSIST SET PERSIST TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE (PERSIST_ONLY too)
MySQL SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ COMMITTED, READ ONLY first characteristic only, full_input=0 both, comma-separated, full_input=1
MySQL SET SESSION TRANSACTION READ ONLY, sql_mode='TRADITIONAL' OK, full_input=0, AST SET TRANSACTION READ ONLY ERROR (server: 1064)
MySQL SET sql_mode='TRADITIONAL', SESSION TRANSACTION READ ONLY OK, full_input=0, AST SET sql_mode = ? ERROR (server: 1064)
PG SET SESSION CHARACTERISTICS AS TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE (now applies to the current transaction only) SET SESSION CHARACTERISTICS AS TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE
PG SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE READ ONLY DEFERRABLE first mode only, full_input=0 all modes, full_input=1
PG SET LOCAL TRANSACTION READ ONLY ERROR SET LOCAL TRANSACTION READ ONLY (valid PG grammar, checked against libpg_query 18)
PG SET TRANSACTION SNAPSHOT '00000003-0000001B-1' SET TRANSACTION, full_input=0 NORMAL SET TRANSACTION SNAPSHOT '00000003-0000001B-1', DIGEST SET TRANSACTION SNAPSHOT ?
PG SET search_path TO a, b SET search_path = a (values dropped; full_input=1) SET search_path = a, b
PG SET ROLE x / SET SESSION AUTHORIZATION x / SET CONSTRAINTS ALL DEFERRED SET (no emitter) full statement
PG SET SESSION search_path = a, b SET SESSION search_path = a SET SESSION search_path = a, b
PG SET LOCAL search_path = a, b full_input=0 SET LOCAL search_path = a, b

Every case above was checked against MySQL 8.4.8 (PREPARE of the statement) and libpg_query 18-latest. ParserSQL now accepts exactly what the servers accept for these forms, and the NORMAL output parses back to itself.

Grammar now enforced

  • MySQL: SET [GLOBAL|SESSION|LOCAL|PERSIST|PERSIST_ONLY] TRANSACTION characteristic [, characteristic], with at most one ISOLATION LEVEL and at most one access mode. Commas are required. Repeats, DEFERRABLE and SNAPSHOT are rejected.
  • PostgreSQL: SET [LOCAL|SESSION] TRANSACTION mode [[,] mode ...], SET [LOCAL|SESSION] SESSION CHARACTERISTICS AS TRANSACTION mode [[,] mode ...], and SET [LOCAL|SESSION] TRANSACTION SNAPSHOT 'id' (standalone). Modes are ISOLATION LEVEL x, READ ONLY|WRITE, [NOT] DEFERRABLE, and repeats are allowed as in PG.
  • Rejected: an empty or dangling list, quoted keywords, unknown levels, and trailing tokens other than ;. SET TRANSACTION combined with any other SET item is rejected in either order, which matches MySQL 8.4.8, 5.7.44 and MariaDB 10.11.9. Valid MySQL mixes such as SET NAMES utf8mb4, sql_mode='x' and SET CHARACTER SET utf8, autocommit=0 still parse fully.

AST / API changes

NODE_SET_TRANSACTION:

  • flags: new FLAG_SET_TRANSACTION_CHARACTERISTICS (0x01) marks the PG SESSION CHARACTERISTICS AS TRANSACTION form (the session default). Before this PR that form was indistinguishable from SET SESSION TRANSACTION, which in PG only affects the current transaction.
  • optional first child NODE_IDENTIFIER scope. Its value is now canonical uppercase (GLOBAL, SESSION, LOCAL, PERSIST, PERSIST_ONLY) and source holds the original token. SET SESSION CHARACTERISTICS ... has no scope child any more (it used to have SESSION). SET LOCAL|SESSION SESSION CHARACTERISTICS ... has the outer scope.
  • characteristics: changed from NODE_IDENTIFIER children with raw spans ("read committed") to one NODE_TRANSACTION_OPTION per characteristic in input order. Values are canonical: ISOLATION LEVEL READ COMMITTED, ISOLATION LEVEL REPEATABLE READ, ISOLATION LEVEL READ UNCOMMITTED, ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE, READ ONLY, READ WRITE, DEFERRABLE, NOT DEFERRABLE, SNAPSHOT. This is the same node type and naming used for BEGIN / START TRANSACTION. SNAPSHOT carries its NODE_LITERAL_STRING as a child, and source spans the original tokens.

Other nodes:

  • NODE_SET_ROLE: the LOCAL child value is now canonical LOCAL.
  • NODE_SET_SESSION_AUTHORIZATION / NODE_SET_ROLE: DEFAULT is canonical, string values keep source, and quoted names set FLAG_IDENT_DELIMITED.
  • NODE_SET_CONSTRAINTS: the mode is canonical DEFERRED/IMMEDIATE, and quoted names set FLAG_IDENT_DELIMITED.

SetParser<D>::parse() returns nullptr (ERROR) for a SET statement that mixes TRANSACTION with other items.

Consumers in this repo

parameterize.h lists NODE_SET_TRANSACTION / NODE_SET_ROLE / ... as unsupported, so nothing changes there. The engine (session.h), sharding and planning code do not walk these nodes. The stmt cache copies values, and static canonical values are copied like any other.

ProxySQL impact (for the bump)

  • The SET walker (walk_set_stmt) ignores NODE_SET_TRANSACTION, NODE_SET_ROLE, NODE_SET_SESSION_AUTHORIZATION and NODE_SET_CONSTRAINTS, so it needs no code change for the AST change.
  • Digest text changes with *-query_processor_parser=1. match_regexes[2] (^SET +(|SESSION +)TRANSACTION ...) runs against the digest:
    • SET GLOBAL|LOCAL|PERSIST|PERSIST_ONLY TRANSACTION ... and PG SET SESSION CHARACTERISTICS AS TRANSACTION ... used to digest to SET TRANSACTION .... They matched the regex and were handled as session or next-transaction changes. They no longer match, which is the same behaviour as the legacy tokenizer digest.
    • MySQL SET LOCAL TRANSACTION (a synonym for SESSION) also stops matching. ProxySQL may want LOCAL in that regex.
    • PG SET ROLE / SET SESSION AUTHORIZATION / SET CONSTRAINTS used to all digest to SET . PG multi-value SET search_path = a, b used to digest as SET search_path = a. Query rules and stats keyed on those digests will see the new text.
  • Statements that mix SET TRANSACTION with other items, and PG SET TRANSACTION forms with trailing junk, now return ERROR instead of OK with full_input=0. Both ProxySQL paths already treat non-full parses as unparsed, so the routing outcome is unchanged.

Not changed (pre-existing, found while auditing; follow-ups)

  • General partial-OK contract: a SET with trailing content outside the TRANSACTION forms still returns status=OK, full_input=0, with remaining pointing at the unconsumed text. Examples: SET a=1 junk, SET a=1, =2, SET NAMES utf8 junk, PG SET search_path = a b, PG SET search_path = a, TRANSACTION READ ONLY (in PG, transaction is a valid value word). A legitimate multi-statement SET a=1; SELECT 1 returns the same status, so consumers must treat full_input=false as "AST covers a prefix only".
  • A variable assignment without =/TO is accepted as complete: SET autocommit 1, PG SET work_mem 64 (OK, full_input=1). As a result MySQL 8 SET ROLE r parses as variable ROLE, and SET NAMES with no charset returns OK.
  • PG SET TIME ZONE INTERVAL '1' HOUR stores a raw span as a string literal. NORMAL emission is 'INTERVAL '1' HOUR' (invalid SQL) and HOUR TO MINUTE is not covered. Fixing it changes the timezone value ProxySQL tracks, so it is left for a separate change.
  • PG SET LOCAL|SESSION TIME ZONE ... and SET LOCAL SESSION AUTHORIZATION ... return ERROR. A full make pg-compat-refresh on current main reports the 3 SET LOCAL TIME ZONE corpus rows as DEEP_SUPPORTED to ERROR against the committed baseline. That comes from fix: reject expression-valued PostgreSQL SET assignments #70, not from this PR: the old DEEP result was TIME = ZONE '...'.
  • Var-assignment scope keywords keep their source case in the AST and digest (SET global x = ?).

Tests

  • New tests/test_set_transaction.cpp covers:
    • Both dialects, every scope, the PG CHARACTERISTICS and SNAPSHOT forms.
    • Whitespace, newline, comment and case variants, and multiple characteristics.
    • AST shape checks.
    • Invalid forms and mixed-item rejection in both orders, plus valid MySQL mixes.
    • Multi-statement remaining.
    • PG list, ROLE, SESSION AUTHORIZATION and CONSTRAINTS emission.
    • Each round trip checks NORMAL output, DIGEST output and re-parse stability.
  • Fixed MySQLSetTest.SetTransactionIsolation, which passed a length that included the string's NUL terminator.
  • make test: 1790 passed, 37 skipped (backend-dependent).
  • make test-pg-compat: 87 unit tests OK; 5122 committed CI cases checked.
  • make test-mysql-compat: 545 curated witnesses, 0 mismatches (native oracle not available locally).
  • make build-corpus-test builds.
  • Old/new output diff over all 713 distinct PG regress-corpus SET statements: the only changes are the improvements listed above.
  • pg_compat baseline: only the 6 improved rows are updated (TRAILING_INPUT to DEEP_SUPPORTED). A full refresh would rewrite the source paths of every row for the local cache layout.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for parsing and normalizing more MySQL and PostgreSQL SET statements, including transaction characteristics, transaction snapshots, session characteristics, roles, session authorization, and constraints.
    • Transaction options and variable assignments now preserve multiple values and emit them in the appropriate order and format.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Malformed or unsupported combinations of transaction settings are now rejected instead of being partially accepted.

SET [scope] TRANSACTION lost its scope in emitted SQL: the emitter skipped
the scope child on the false assumption that the SET emitter had already
written it, and did not recognise PERSIST / PERSIST_ONLY, emitting them as
an isolation level. The parser stored "READ COMMITTED", "REPEATABLE READ"
and "READ ONLY" as raw source spans, so whitespace, comments and case
leaked into the AST and digests, and "READ ONLY" was emitted as an
isolation level. Only the first characteristic was parsed.

Parse the whole statement in one place. Each characteristic becomes a
NODE_TRANSACTION_OPTION with a canonical value, as for BEGIN / START
TRANSACTION; the scope is a canonical NODE_IDENTIFIER first child.
PostgreSQL SESSION CHARACTERISTICS AS TRANSACTION sets
FLAG_SET_TRANSACTION_CHARACTERISTICS instead of masquerading as SET
SESSION TRANSACTION, which only affects the current transaction there.
Add PostgreSQL space-separated modes, [NOT] DEFERRABLE, TRANSACTION
SNAPSHOT 'id', SET LOCAL TRANSACTION and [LOCAL|SESSION] SESSION
CHARACTERISTICS. Enforce MySQL's comma separators and one isolation level
and one access mode.

Reject anything the servers reject instead of returning a partial OK AST:
missing or dangling characteristics, quoted keywords, and SET TRANSACTION
combined with any other SET item in either order (MySQL 8.4, 5.7 and
MariaDB 10.11 return 1064 for both orders).

Fix PostgreSQL SET emitters that dropped content: list values after the
first (search_path, DateStyle), and SET ROLE, SET SESSION AUTHORIZATION
and SET CONSTRAINTS, which emitted only "SET ". SET LOCAL and SET SESSION
assignments now take value lists like the unscoped form. Keep quoted role
and constraint names delimited.
…ts in pg_compat baseline

Six corpus statements move from TRAILING_INPUT to DEEP_SUPPORTED: SET
TRANSACTION SNAPSHOT, multi-mode SET TRANSACTION / SESSION CHARACTERISTICS,
and SET LOCAL search_path with a value list. Only these rows change; a full
refresh rewrites every row's source paths for the local cache layout.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The parser now handles additional MySQL and PostgreSQL SET forms, including transaction characteristics, and the emitter outputs these forms with their characteristics and values. Tests cover parsing, AST structure, normalization, round trips, rejection cases, and compatibility results.

Changes

SET statement parsing and emission

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse and validate SET forms
include/sql_parser/common.h, include/sql_parser/set_parser.h
The parser adds transaction-scope and characteristic parsing, PostgreSQL session-characteristics and LOCAL handling, canonicalized AST values, and whole-statement rejection for invalid transaction combinations.
Emit SET forms
include/sql_parser/emitter.h
The emitter dispatches role, session authorization, and constraint nodes. It emits transaction characteristics in order and includes all assignment values.
Validate parsing and round trips
Makefile, tests/test_set.cpp, tests/test_set_transaction.cpp, tests/pg_compat/*
Tests cover MySQL and PostgreSQL parsing, AST structure, normalization, output, rejected forms, and compatibility results. The Makefile adds the transaction test source, and an existing test now uses the SQL string’s actual length.

Merge Risk | 🔵 Low · up to a23e3

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a23e3

Some SQL rejected by MySQL or MariaDB is reported as supported. Restrict transaction scopes before merging, or accept this bounded compatibility gap.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a23e3

The change preserves security-relevant SQL that was previously omitted or normalized incorrectly. No new execution path or authorization bypass was demonstrated, but downstream use of the changed output and digests is not fully established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is to callers consuming SET ASTs, emitted SQL, or AST-derived digests. Newly emitted identity-changing SQL is security-relevant, but expansion into backend execution, tenant exposure, or additional privileges depends on downstream callers not established by the available evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected Session execution boundary requires successful, full-input parsing and has no SET execution branch. These controls counter a direct in-repository privilege-escalation interpretation of the expanded representation contract; they do not establish equivalent controls in external callers.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The stricter whole-statement rejection applies to transaction forms. Legacy non-transaction SET forms can still produce partial parses, so successful status alone is not a complete-input guarantee; that behavior predates this PR.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before adoption, validate downstream execution and policy consumers against the changed canonical output and digest values. Require successful full-input parsing before acting on SQL, and keep authorization separate from normalization.

Lines 653, 659, 661 and 664 use a runtime if on D == Dialect::..., and D is a template constant. The code compiles and behaves correctly. Lines 606 and 682 in the same function use if constexpr, so these four lines are inconsistent with them. No functional defect exists, so no change is required.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

emit_set_role decides whether to print LOCAL from the child count, not from the scope child.

The emitter prints LOCAL whenever the NODE_SET_ROLE node has two children. It does not check the first child. The parser currently builds a second child only when the role is local, so the output is correct today. If any other code path adds a second child, the emitter will print LOCAL by mistake, and the scope of the role change will be wrong. The proposed fix checks that the first child is a NODE_IDENTIFIER with the value LOCAL. An extra flag on the node also works.
