Describe the info bar appearance in Visual Studio 2026 - #11461
Andrii Chebukin (xperiandri) wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
The notifications recipe calls the Info Bar a yellow bar, and the UX guidelines show the yellow infobar of earlier versions. In Visual Studio 2026 an info bar has a neutral background, and a warning, error, or success status icon gives it the caution, critical, or success color. - Notifications recipe: drop "yellow" and add a note about the icon-based color. - UX guidelines: add a note that names the color tokens, and a current screenshot. | > The image shows the infobar of earlier versions of Visual Studio. Starting with Visual Studio 2026, an infobar is a rounded card with a neutral background, and its icon sets its color: the warning, error, and success status icons (`KnownMonikers.StatusWarning`, `KnownMonikers.StatusError`, and `KnownMonikers.StatusOK`) give the infobar the caution, critical, and success background. The guidance in this section about usage, placement, and stacking still applies. For the color values, see `EnvironmentLayeredBackground`, `EnvironmentLayeredBorder`, `SystemFillCautionBackground`, `SystemFillCriticalBackground`, and `SystemFillSuccessBackground` in [Visual Studio theme color tokens](theme-color-token-reference.md). |
| An Info Bar is a bar at the top of a tool- or document window. It's useful for grabbing the attention of the user without blocking them. An Info Bar can contain an icon, text, and several hyperlinks. | ||

Problem
Two extensibility articles describe the info bar as it looked before Visual Studio 2026:
In Visual Studio 2026 the info bar is a rounded card with a neutral background (
EnvironmentLayeredBackground), and a warning, error, or success status icon switches it to the caution, critical, or success background. An extension author who reads these articles cannot tell that the icon now decides the color.Change
version-control/media/visualstudio/git-create-pull-request-infobar-two-links.png, so no image is added. The guidance about usage, placement, and stacking is unchanged.
How it was checked
EnvironmentLayeredBackgroundandEnvironmentLayeredBorder, and switches the background toSystemFillCriticalBackground,SystemFillSuccessBackground, orSystemFillCautionBackgroundwhen the icon isKnownMonikers.StatusError,StatusOK, orStatusWarning. Please correct the wording if the icon-to-color mapping is meant to be an implementation detail rather than documented behavior.
