Description

This PR adds support for UITabBarController.Sidebar.preferredPlacement through a new tabBarSidebarPreferredPlacement prop for iOS 27.

It lets you decide whether tab items are displayed in the tab bar or in the sidebar when both are available, but only one of them can be displayed (e.g. on large iPhones in landscape). For the prop to take effect, tabBarControllerMode must be set to tabSidebar.

Closes https://github.com/software-mansion/react-native-screens-labs/issues/1820

Changes

  • Add the tabBarSidebarPreferredPlacement prop and pass it to _controller.sidebar.preferredPlacement on the native side.
  • Add the Tab Bar Sidebar Preferred Placement single feature test.

Visual documentation

Screen.Recording.aaa.16-09-2026.at.17.27.44.mp4

Test plan

Run the Tab Bar Sidebar Preferred Placement single feature test on an iOS 27 iPhone 18 Pro Max

Caution

When #4816 lands, this test moves to component integration tests /tabs-stack-v5.

Checklist

  • Included code example that can be used to test this change.
  • For visual changes, included screenshots / GIFs / recordings documenting the change.
  • For API changes, updated relevant public types.
  • Ensured that CI passes

cc @LKuchno should we just mark it as "Incomplete" at this point if it's horizontal Pro only?

I would leave it for now with TBD and this note, we can consider changing simulator to Pro.

🟡 Minor · Guard and reset preferredPlacement outside tabSidebar. · RNSTabsHostComponentView.mm:307-318

ios/tabs/host/RNSTabsHostComponentView.mm:307-318
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Guard and reset preferredPlacement outside tabSidebar. When tabBarControllerMode is automatic and tabBarSidebarPreferredPlacement is sidebar, this branch still assigns .sidebar to _controller.sidebar.preferredPlacement. UIKit uses this property to choose between the sidebar and tab bar when only one can be displayed, including iOS 27 iPhone sidebar layouts. The reachable automatic + sidebar scenario can therefore display a sidebar even though the repository contract requires tabSidebar. A transition from tabSidebar also leaves the previous preference set because this branch runs only when the placement prop changes. Apply the preference only in tabSidebar, and reset it to .automatic when leaving that mode.

🟡 Minor · Guard tabBarControllerMode on tvOS. · RNSTabsHostComponentView.mm:294-304

ios/tabs/host/RNSTabsHostComponentView.mm:294-304
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Guard tabBarControllerMode on tvOS. TabsHost.ios.tsx forwards non-default values to RNSTabsHostComponentView, and the tvOS target compiles this branch because its availability macro does not exclude tvOS. @available(iOS 18.0, *) is true on tvOS, but UITabBarController.mode requires tvOS 18. On supported tvOS 15.1–17.x, the assignment can call an unavailable API and may crash. Wrap the entire mode-update block in #if !TARGET_OS_TV; this also enforces the documented unsupported-tvOS contract.

Look good to me, but before we merge, please verify that these two are native bugs:

  1. When I show the overlay sidebar (by swiping), the bottom of the screen disappears
  2. On the second screen, where the content is shorter than screen height, it moves when showing the overlay

I've tested it in the native app. Both issues are caused by insets being applied incorrectly when the overlay sidebar is open.

## Description

iOS 27 changed how navigation bar header items are exposed to Detox: an
item can no longer be reliably matched and gestured on as an element, so
the stack v5 header suites (icon, item identifier, menu) could not press
header items or open their menus at all.

This adds a shared header-item helper layer that falls back to
coordinate-driven gestures on iOS 27, and fixes a coordinate-tap bug
that made those gestures land in the wrong place.

## Changes

- `e2e/helpers/framework/gestures.ts`
- Coordinate taps and long presses are now rounded to whole points. The
iOS XCUITest runner parses coordinates with `Int(String)`, so a
fractional value fails to parse and silently falls back to `(100, 100)`
— the gesture still reported success while hitting the wrong place.
- `e2e/helpers/framework/header-items-ios.ts`
- Shared helpers for matching and acting on navigation bar items:
`headerItemMatcher`, `headerItem`, `expectHeaderItemShown`,
`expectBarButtonIconShown`, `longPressHeaderItem`, plus an `isIOS27`
flag so call sites can branch in one place.
- `e2e/helpers/framework/context-menu-ios.ts`
- `openHeaderItemMenu(title, options)` opens a header item's menu, using
a coordinate tap or long press on iOS 27 where the item cannot be
gestured on as an element.
- `test-stack-header-icon-ios`, `test-stack-header-item-identifier-ios`
and `test-stack-header-menu-ios` specs moved onto those helpers.
- The matching `scenario.md` / `scenario-description.ts` files updated
for the iOS 27 behaviour.
