How to use skipToken with useReadQuery?

Hey there,
I'm using useBackgrounQuery and useReadQuery with skipToken.
However, when the skipToken is passed, useBackgroundQuery returns undefined as ref, which causes useReadQuery to throw a runtime error.

I couldn't find a solution for the conditional useReadQuery call in the docs.
Do you have any suggestions?

Here's the code, I'm using @apollo/client@3.13.5:

  const [ref] = useBackgroundQuery(QUERY, condition ? undefined : skipToken);
  const { data } = useReadQuery(ref) // Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'Symbol(apollo.internal.queryRef)')
